The etching shows a female figure captured in a quiet, contemplative moment. Rendered in soft shades of green and blue, the image unfolds through the layered techniques of soft-ground etching, aquatint, and monotype, creating a composition of weightless stillness. The woman's gaze is turned inward, but she is watchful, her hands holding a bundle of delicate sage leaves. A plant that symbolizes cleansing, healing and wisdom. Subtle lines like the arched eyebrows and delicate hands as well as nuanced textures such as in the leaves and the hair, give the scene a poetic depth.

About Donna Volta Newmen

Donna Volta Newmen (born 1990 in Chemnitz, Germany) is a visual artist whose work merges traditional intaglio printing with contemporary portraiture. Raised in a printmaking atelier, she earned her MA in Fine Art and Design from the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam in 2019. Her etchings and monoprints explore identity, power, and memory. She has exhibited at institutions such as Museum Gunzenhauser Chemnitz, and the British Film Institute.

About Etching

Originating in medieval Europe, etching became one of the most important printmaking techniques of the old masters. Using acid to bite designs into metal plates, artists achieved remarkable detail and expression.
