In this work, Arturo Herrera draws on fragments from reproductions of paintings by classical and Baroque artists. The figure pulling a bow feels familiar, yet Herrera’s cuts, enlargements, and overlays resist clear identification. Bold pink shapes step forward as protagonists at the same time obscuring parts of the historical source.

The series 'Portal' unites three etchings built from fragments of historical reproductions by artists such as Pollaiuolo, Piero di Cosimo, and Rubens. Herrera treats these sources not as fixed references but as material to be cut, layered, and transformed. Vivid colour shapes interrupt and obscure parts of the original images, shifting the focus from recognition to perception.

About the Frame

The bright white tone of this oak frame and its distinctive grain pattern give artworks a contemporary frame that still feels warm and organic. This choice of wood complements a wide range of artworks, adding clarity and sophistication without distraction.

We collaborate with a trusted manufacturer who crafts our frames using real wood veneer. This approach preserves the authentic character and texture of the wood while ensuring sustainable use of high-quality materials. Each frame is designed as a distance frame, keeping the glass slightly away from the artwork for both aesthetic and conservation reasons. We use museum glass for superior protection and clarity, maintaining the artwork’s true colors and fine details. For aesthetic reasons, our artworks are typically framed without a mat, creating a clean, contemporary presentation. With a slim 13 mm profile, the frame enhances the artwork’s presence without overpowering it.

About Arturo Herrera

Arturo Herrera (born 1959 in Caracas, Venezuela) is a Berlin-based visual artist. His work spans collage, painting, sculpture, and wall-based installations. Trained in the United States, his practice explores fragmentation, chance, and layered imagery rooted in modernist abstraction and pop/cultural iconography. He has been recognized internationally with exhibitions at venues such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Tate, and grants including a Guggenheim Fellowship. Herrera’s work asks viewers to engage the subtle boundaries between representation and abstraction.

About Etching

Originating in medieval Europe, etching became one of the most important printmaking techniques of the old masters. Using acid to bite designs into metal plates, artists achieved remarkable detail and expression.
