Donna Volta Newmen uses etching, aquatint, and monotype to create a series of prints for the 'Alraune' series that allows her to significantly change the appearance of each of the prints in the edition. This skillful and playful use of different printing techniques is typical of her work.

Named after the legendary mandrake plant, Alraune draws on a rich history of myths surrounding transformation and enchantment. Associated for centuries with feminine magic and hidden knowledge, the Alraune serves as a fitting counterpart to Newmen's dreamlike yet daring figure.

White picture frame corner on a white background, white maple slat

About the Frame

Finished with a softly broken white varnish, the wood texture remains gently visible beneath the surface. This allows the natural character of the maple to subtly shine through, creating a light, refined frame.

We collaborate with a trusted manufacturer who crafts our frames using real wood veneer. This approach preserves the authentic character and texture of the wood while ensuring sustainable use of high-quality materials. Each frame is designed as a distance frame, keeping the glass slightly away from the artwork for both aesthetic and conservation reasons. We use museum glass for superior protection and clarity, maintaining the artwork’s true colors and fine details. For aesthetic reasons, our artworks are typically framed without a mat, creating a clean, contemporary presentation. With a slim 13 mm profile, the frame enhances the artwork’s presence without overpowering it.

About Donna Volta Newmen

Donna Volta Newmen (born 1990 in Chemnitz, Germany) is a visual artist whose work merges traditional intaglio printing with contemporary portraiture. Raised in a printmaking atelier, she earned her MA in Fine Art and Design from the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam in 2019. Her etchings and monoprints explore identity, power, and memory. She has exhibited at institutions such as Museum Gunzenhauser Chemnitz, and the British Film Institute.

About Etching

Originating in medieval Europe, etching became one of the most important printmaking techniques of the old masters. Using acid to bite designs into metal plates, artists achieved remarkable detail and expression.
