In this two-color woodcut, a face emerges from a cascade of leaves. The contrast between coarse and fine lines as well as between the light and dark, textured areas cast a spell over the viewer. The face appears both human and botanical, as if part of a slow metamorphosis. The leaves wreathe the face and seem to be slowly falling at the same time. The image suggests a process of transformation and rebirth – a being gradually “emerging” from nature’s depths.

About Dennis Scholl

Dennis Scholl (born 1980 in Hünfeld, Germany) lives and works in Berlin. He studied at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg. Scholl’s woodcuts extend his drawing and painting practice into relief form, combining clear contours and reduced compositions with symbolic and narrative depth. His works have been shown at M+B Los Angeles, Galerie Michael Haas, and Kunstverein Göttingen, among others.
