This unique work on paper by Dennis Scholl was inspired by his woodcut of the same name. In this painting, the colors are more subdued and the structure of the paper gives the work a three-dimensional character that emphasizes the dramatic scene.

As is characteristic of Scholl's work, the central figure exudes an aura of mystery. Its gaze is timid, almost vulnerable. The flames that envelop it do not threaten it, but are an intrinsic part of its being. One flame even seems to grow out of its head. The fire casts a radiant glow without consuming its surroundings.

The maple wood artist's frame harmonizes with the colors of the picture and offers perfect protection for the fragile paper work.
