This etching by Thomas Schütte presents a reduced yet striking portrait. With just a few precise lines, the artist captures the face of a person wearing a close-fitting cap. The gaze, slightly averted, conveys both thoughtfulness and distance. Delicate hues of blue  highlight the etching, lending quiet intensity to the otherwise restrained composition. The surrounding emptiness emphasizes the face.

About Thomas Schütte
Thomas Schütte (born 1954 in Oldenburg, Germany) is one of the most influential contemporary German artists. Trained at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Gerhard Richter and Benjamin Buchloh, his practice spans sculpture, drawing, architecture, and printmaking. His etchings and aquatints reflect the same interest in form and irony found in his larger works and have been exhibited at MoMA New York, the Reina Sofía Madrid, and the Fondation Beyeler Basel.

About Etching
Originating in medieval Europe, etching became one of the most important printmaking techniques of the old masters. Using acid to bite designs into metal plates, artists achieved remarkable detail and expression.
