Lithograph 'Taste of Nature' by Olaf Hajek
Lithograph 'Taste of Nature' by Olaf Hajek
In this lithograph of a head, you can recognize Olaf Hajek's typical care and his mastery of the line. Only gradually does one discover the variety of plants and animals in the composition of soft green and red. It is the beauty and poetry of nature in whose gaze one can lose oneself.
This work is Olaf Hajek's very first lithograph, which he produced together with and exclusively for FRIDAY BIRD. The edition was printed in Berlin by Ulrich Kühle in his workshop Keystone Editions.

About Olaf Hajek
About Olaf Hajek
Olaf Hajek (born 1965 in Rendsburg, Germany) has made a name for himself worldwide as a celebrated illustrator and painter. As an illustrator, he has published countless books and collaborated with almost all major (design) brands. His most recent projects include a collection of vases for the Meissen porcelain manufactory. In the 2024 Christmas season, he will be designing the festive decorations for the renowned London department stores, Fortnum & Mason.
Olaf Hajek has also enjoyed great success as a painter and freelance artist in recent years. Last year, he exhibited at the Esther Schipper Gallery in Paris and presented his works internationally in Shanghai at Line Gallery.
In his works, the artist plays with motifs from flora and fauna, archaic symbols and contemporary themes. The translation into his pictorial world is as light-footed as it is vivid. He comments on aspects of artificiality in nature as well as the interdependable relationship between humans and animals and the conflicts that can arise. Hajek treats all his subjects with love and respect and shows topics such as intimacy and tenderness as well as the reappraisal of German fairy tales and fables.
What is a lithograph?
What is a lithograph?
Lithography is a printing process based on the principle that water and oil do not mix. To create an image, the artist uses a greasy crayon or ink to draw onto a limestone block or metal plate. This image is then chemically treated so that the grease adheres to the stone or plate. Any excess is removed before printing. The printer then sprays the stone or plate with water and covers it with oil-based ink. The oily ink sticks only to the greasy image areas, while the water repels it from the areas without the image. Finally, the image is transferred to paper with a printing press. Each color requires a separate stone or plate. Artists often choose this method because they can use the crayons and brushes to create delicate and painterly effects.
