In her artworks, artist and biologist Aline Schwörer often creates seemingly hybrid creatures that are reminiscent of archaeological findings. They seem to come from an indeterminate time. The artist sees the sculpture as a further development of her ‘Fragments of Landscapes’ series. This handmade candle holder is more than just a functional object. It is a work of art and a statement piece that will enhance any dresser or dinner table.

About Aline Schwörer

Aline Schwörer (born 1993) is an artist and biologist. Her sculptures deal with the exploitation of the biosphere, the 'body of the earth' and its living creatures. The artist scrutinises the interaction between humans, the environment and time. In doing so, she creates hypothetical future scenarios and fakes archaeological objects.

In her works, naturalness and artificiality merge inseparably. She also experiments with the production of her own bioplastics, builds molds from agar agar instead of silicone, and recycles materials.

After a degree in biology Aline Schwörer is a graduate of the Berlin University of the Arts (UDK) and was awarded the prestigious UDK President's Prize in 2022. Since then, she has participated in group and solo exhibitions in galleries and institutions throughout Germany, Cuba, and the USA, including HAUNT Berlin, Festival Internacional de Cine y Medio Ambiente del Caribe, Isla Verde, Cuba, Echo Contemporary Art, Atlanta, Kunstverein Meißen and more. She is a member of the frontviews collective and Unknown Recipients. With the latter, she took part in documenta fifteen in 2022.

What is ceramic?

Ceramics are a versatile material that is created by firing clay and other mineral substances. It has been used for thousands of years for various applications, from everyday objects such as crockery and tiles to artistic sculptures.

The manufacturing process involves several steps: Moulding, drying and firing, whereby the temperature and type of clay are decisive for the properties of the end product. Ceramics are characterized by their durability, temperature resistance, and aesthetics, making them popular for both functional and decorative purposes.

Modern ceramics often experiment with different glazes and techniques to create unique surfaces and designs.
