The piece presents a powerful black-and-white portrait of the renowned abolitionist and social reformer Frederick Douglass. Through bold, dynamic lines and stark contrasts, Peyton captures Douglass’s commanding presence, highlighting his strong features and penetrating gaze. The linocut technique lends a raw, visceral quality to the image, blending a sense of timelessness with a contemporary edge. This portrayal reflects Peyton’s ongoing fascination with historical figures who have left a lasting mark on culture and politics.

About the Frame

About Elizabeth Peyton

Elizabeth Peyton (born 1965 in Danbury, Connecticut, USA) is internationally known for her intimate portraits of artists, writers, and cultural icons. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York, she has exhibited at major institutions including the New Museum, the Royal Academy of Arts, and the Museum of Modern Art. In her linocuts, Peyton translates her subjects into clear lines and tonal contrasts, capturing both likeness and emotion with striking simplicity.

About Linocut

A modern evolution of woodcut, artists started to use linocut in the 20th century. By using the softer material of linoleum it invites for bolder experimentation. Its clean lines and rich textures make it a favorite for contemporary printmakers.
