In this lithograph, the artist William MacKendree combines the simple geometric shape of stacked ice cubes with grid lines on which the cubes appear to float. The motif is further emphasized by the rich colors. The embossed printing of the motifs gives the work an additional three-dimensionality and a special feel.

About William MacKendree

The artist was born in Augusta, Georgia in the USA in 1948. One of his greatest sources of inspiration were the works of the painter Joan Miró, whose expressive power made a deep impression on him. From 1975, he lived on the Greek island of Paros for seven years - an experience that also had a strong influence on him. Since 1982, MacKendree has lived and worked mainly in Paris.

He often uses everyday objects as his motifs: items of clothing, plants, buildings. When drawing or painting, he likes to get as close to the object as possible, sometimes even holding it in his hand.

What is a lithograph?

Lithography is a printing process based on the principle that water and oil do not mix. To create an image, the artist uses a greasy crayon or ink to draw onto a limestone block or metal plate. This image is then chemically treated so that the grease adheres to the stone or plate. Any excess is removed before printing. The printer then sprays the stone or plate with water and covers it with oil-based ink. The oily ink sticks only to the greasy image areas, while the water repels it from the areas without the image. Finally, the image is transferred to paper with a printing press. Each color requires a separate stone or plate. Artists often choose this method because they can use the crayons and brushes to create delicate and painterly effects.
